CEO & President
David Shapiro is the president and CEO of MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership. With MENTOR’s board of directors, Shapiro guides the organization to serve more youth, more effectively by driving investment of time and money in high-impact mentoring, providing a public voice for mentoring and promoting quality mentoring through the development and delivery of standards, cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art tools.
Before his appointment to MENTOR, Shapiro was president and CEO of Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP), the state’s umbrella organization for youth mentoring. MMP works across sectors to increase the quantity and quality of youth mentoring opportunities for the commonwealth’s young people. MMP has a statewide network of 175 mentoring programs that serve 23,000 young people.
During Shapiro’s seven-year tenure, MMP opened a Western Massachusetts office and launched initiatives including: Champions of Mentoring at Fenway Park, Highland Street AmeriCorps Ambassadors of Mentoring, Red Sox Mentoring Challenge, Quality-Based Membership, Mass Mentoring Counts and the Bill Russell Mentoring Grants Program. MMP grew by 400 percent, protected and increased state funding for mentoring, collaborated to attract federal funding and distributes more than $300,000 to the field, $500,000 in services and $250,000 in match activities and scholarships for mentees.
In addition, the number of young people matched in quality mentoring relationships increased by almost 50 percent through MMP’s work with high quality mentoring programs driving impact in critical societal issues from youth violence prevention to academic achievement to workforce development.
Shapiro is chair of the board of the Mass Nonprofit Network and on the boards of Common Impact and Friends of the Children-Boston. He has received the Excellence in Leadership Award by MENTOR, was selected for the Barr Foundation Fellowship and was named to the Boston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40. He lives in Jamaica Plain with his wife Kristin, who is a financial aid advisor for uAspire, and two sons, Brennan and Jack.
Chief Program Officer
Tammy Tai is the chief program officer at MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership. In this role, Tai is responsible for providing support to a network of Local and State Mentoring Partnerships, supporting the dissemination of relevant research to the field; and creating multiple ways to share learning and best practices within and outside of the mentoring field.
Previously, Tai spent four years at the Hyams Foundation as the teen development program officer where she designed and implemented an initiative called Teen Futures that focused on addressing the high school dropout rate in Boston and Chelsea. Her commitment to tap the power and potential of young people was solidified through her work running summer and after-school programs in Mission Hill as a college student. From there, she spent four years as an elementary bilingual Spanish teacher and also directed a mentoring program for high-risk teenagers in Phoenix, Arizona. Tai has been a nonprofit consultant helping organizations expand their programmatic capacity and worked with the Mass Mentoring Partnership to help design the Ambassadors of Mentoring Program.
Tai has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Harvard University and an MBA from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. Raised in New York by immigrant parents from Jamaica, Tai currently lives in Dorchester with her husband, a nonprofit executive director, and their three children.
Chief Advancement Officer
Erika Field is the Chief Advancement Officer of MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, which is the unifying champion for youth mentoring in the United States. In this capacity, she is responsible for leading external relations, including development and communications, to support the organization’s growth through strategic fundraising and marketing targeted at increasing financial support and raising the profile and influence of the national mentoring movement.
Previously, Field was the Director of Corporate Partnerships at Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB), an organization serving more than 15,000 youth annually in Boston and Chelsea by helping them achieve three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles. She managed the Institutional Relations team responsible for grant writing and reporting, corporate sponsorship, corporate volunteerism, Corporate Leadership Council events, cause marketing, and third party fundraising efforts. Field created a corporate sponsorship policy for the Clubs and designed a new corporate partnership program during her tenure. She also participated in state-wide events and strategic planning meetings for the Massachusetts Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs. Personally committed to providing youth with opportunities and guidance, she served as an ongoing direct service volunteer, teaching a jewelry making class in the Club’s art room and tutoring in the education room. Prior to BGCB, Field’s professional experience included serving as the Director of Corporate Relations at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston where she was part of the team that raised $504 million for the Building the New MFA Campaign.
Field has presented at the American Alliance of Museums (formerly American Association of Museums) conference on the state of corporate sponsorship and served as a volunteer BASICS instructor for the Association of Fundraising Professionals Massachusetts Chapter. She is an alumna of Duke University and serves on her local Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee. Field is also a founding member of Tomorrow’s Women TODAY and an active community volunteer. In 2012, she was appointed to the Malden Cultural Council by Mayor Gary Christenson. Field resides in Malden with her husband, Gary Hall.
