Celebrity Golf Outing Benefits Recently Launched Newark Mentoring Movement
Saturday, August 11, 2012 - Newark Mayor, Cory Booker, and NFL on FOX analyst, Michael Strahan, headlined the recent Celebrity Golf Outing at the Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, NJ, to benefit the Newark Mentoring Movement (NMM), a new organization that is an emerging Mentoring Partnership in MENTOR’s network.

In addition to this event helping the NMM, there is also a statewide mentoring effort by New Jersey’s Attorney General’s office, which recently received a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service to place AmeriCorps members in mentoring programs in target cities across the state.
Playing in the Celebrity Golf Outing were New York Giant David Diehl, former New York Jet Wayne Chrebet, NFL on FOX reporter Jay Glazer, NBC host and former New York Giant Tiki Barber, former New York Giant and Hall of Fame member Harry Carson, former New York Giant and NFL Analyst Shaun O'Hara, former New Jersey Devil Ken Daneykoand and former NBA player and coach Isaiah Thomas.
The Newark Mentoring Movement was established this year to inculcate youth mentoring into the city of Newark’s culture by making it easier and more accessible. The organization aims to recruit and place 10,000 mentors in the next five years. NMM’s Executive Director Aaron Martin is the former executive director of Minority Athletes Networking.
Booker has been instrumental in spotlighting the need for mentoring in Newark. He said, “Spending just one hour a week mentoring a child can have a huge positive effect on their lives. I’ve been a mentor since college, and it hasn’t been an act of charity. It has enriched my life as much, if not more, than the young people I’ve worked with.”
Strahan, who is a youth mentoring advocate, is a spokesperson for NMM. “Over the course of my professional career, I’ve had the honor of mentoring a number of young people — sharing my experiences and helping them to craft a path to success,” he said. “I’m so proud to stand with Mayor Booker to spread the message of mentoring, working to better the lives of young people and professionals for many years to come.”
MENTOR’s President and Chief Executive Officer David Shapiro said he is very pleased with the success of the Celebrity Golf Outing and burgeoning movement in New Jersey. “Congratulations to the Newark Mentoring Movement in shining the light so brightly on the critical role mentoring and mentors play in the success of our society. And, with the Attorney General’s efforts, we will add foot soldiers for mentoring through AmeriCorps members to advance the movement. We are grateful for the complementary efforts, which will have such a profound impact on the lives of New Jersey’s young people.”
NMM’s Celebrity Golf Outing was made possible by Master Sponsor Winston & Strawn LLP and Champion Sponsors Bloomberg, Motorola Solutions and Steve Lefkowitz and Steve Eisenstein. United Airlines was the exclusive airline sponsor.
