Former Mentee Writes Book Highlighting the Importance of Mentoring

Tuesday, May 15, 2012 - Ean Garrett, former mentee, spokesperson for MENTOR: National Mentoring Partnership and current board member for the Midlands Mentoring Partnership in Nebraska, chronicled his journey to date and how mentors have made a positive difference in his life in the recently released book titled Rebirth of a Dream.

Garrett is a native of Omaha who graduated from Howard University and earned his law degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He founded the Infinite Institute to bring entrepreneurial and leadership training to young black men.

According to a segment of the book’s foreword, "As you read this book … you will be moved by the story of a boy whose early years were marked by a series of devastating blows. Odds makers will tell you that any one of them — the murder of his father; the drug dependency and subsequent rehabilitation of his mother; the inability of a foster-care system to help rather than harm — was likely to have consigned Ean to a future few of us would regard as worth having. Instead, Ean found his way to sources of help, asked for help, and kept asking until he got what he needed to get to where he knew he could go."

Deborah Neary, executive director of the Midlands Mentoring Partnership in Omaha, attended a professional mentoring event and book signing for Ean recently, hosted by the African American Youth Professionals Engagement Initiative and McKenzie & Porter Publishing, LLC.  She said, “Ean Garret has served as a grant reviewer, board member, spokesperson and mentor recruiter for the Midlands Mentoring Partnership. He is a living, breathing example of how mentoring can have a positive impact on the life of a youth. Along with courage and perseverance, he was able to become the successful man he is today with the support and encouragement of a mentor. Ean’s story demonstrates how anything is possible with hard work, and it serves as inspiration to youth all around the world to never give up on their dreams.”
