Advocacy and Awareness
The Mentoring Partnership of New York (MPNY) works to make sure that mentoring is a top priority for community members, schools, youth agencies, businesses, legislators and potential volunteers. We work with media to spread the good word about mentoring and how mentoring works and is a lot of fun!
Advocacy
Our work includes recruiting at a variety of organizational and community meetings, presenting the ABC’s of mentoring to civic and community organizations, getting television, radio and print presence about the need and value of mentoring, sharing research on the benefits of mentoring for youth AND for mentors. Our public service announcements and interviews have appeared on Channel 11, Fox and public stations. We have had print ads and articles in a variety of newspapers, magazines and e-zines.
The Mentoring Partnership of New York’s Facebook “friends” help spread the message and we encourage mentoring programs to add to our page with stories about mentoring pairs, kids in need and successful kids. Our newly designed website (thanks to a terrific grant from the Taproot Foundation!) brings our message to thousands each month.
Awareness
The Mentoring Partnership of New York helps raise awareness about the value of mentoring and works to bring the voices of mentors and program providers to the table when any policy decisions that impact mentoring are made. We advocate for increased resources for mentoring, expansion of access to criminal background screening for mentors and policies that promote successful mentoring programs. We partnered with nearly 100 mentoring programs to help secure the passage of the Safe Mentoring Act in New York State that for the first time, allowed mentoring programs to access the NY State Criminal background check system.
The Mentoring Partnership of New York’s encourages businesses to take the White House's Corporate Challenge to Support Mentoring! To learn more about how your firm can be recognized nationally for your commitment to young people, click here or contact us. The National Mentoring Summit will highlight the great work that Corporate Challenge Companies do and your firm could be featured at this conference which will be done in partnership with the White House. Last year, First Lady Michelle Obama issued the Corporate Mentoring Challenge and we are very proud of the many companies who came forward and answered the call.
