A great session to attend if you are developing a mentoring program, or are interested in strengthening an existing program! Don't miss your opportunity to take home the Elements of Effective Practice Toolkit, a must-have resource for any youth mentoring program!

See what past attendees have said about our training!

"The class was tremendous! I cannot believe how thorough the Toolkit is! It's amazing and unbelievable. I have been spending an enormous amount of time compiling questionnaires from various organizations, but NO MORE! I wish I had known sooner! This saves me SO much time! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!" -- Sharon L. (Concrete Safaris)

"We have operated our mentoring program for many years in New York, but always feel that we can learn new things as the field changes. The workshop was amazing and [my staff] and I are already working on improving our program. We learned a lot and I just got off the phone with another training attendee who called with all kinds of questions about starting her program." -- Candida F. (Children's Village)

The Art of Fingerprinting: How to Roll Good Impressions For Volunteer Mentors

Make your mentor screening process a little smoother. Learn techniques for how to accurately roll the fingerprints of potential mentors for submission to SafetyNET.

One of the most important components of a mentor screening package is a criminal background screen through a national fingerprint database. In order to conduct this type of screen, potential mentors will need to be fingerprinted by a skilled fingerprint "roller". This training session will teach participants techniques for how to accurately roll the fingerprints of potential mentors for submission to SafetyNET directly from your office. This eliminates the need for potential mentors to travel to an off-site location to have their prints rolled, and helps to reduce the risk of having cards returned as ineligible.

At the conclusion of this training participants will:

The Friday Afternoon Series for Mentoring Program Professionals

Friday Afternoon Series

Autumn/Winter 2009-10

All workshops run 2:00-4:00P.M.

The Mentoring Partnership of New York is happy, once again, to host the Friday Afternoon Series; helping professionals in the mentoring community to expand their knowledge and increase supervision skills. Topics selected for the Autumn-Winter 2009-2010 series were developed from participant's survey responses and your suggestions.

October 23, 2009 - Designing a Mentee Orientation and Match Kick off Ice Breakers - Research tells us that matches last longer when both mentors and mentees are properly prepared for their match relationship. Participants of this workshop will partake in a "train the trainer" that emphasizes the key elements in a successful mentee orientation including a sampling of ice breakers games for a mentor/mentee kick off event.

November 20, 2009 - Art Projects For Mentor Pairs - The holidays are just around the corner and even if they were not anytime is a good time for mentors and mentees to create something together. Sharing in the creation of an art project or craft is a great relationship building activity. Our friends at Free Arts will show us, step-by-step, some projects that adults and youth can enjoy together.

December 18, 2009 - Interviewing Mentors: Sharpen your technique - Selecting volunteers with the right qualities to be mentors can be a trying task for program staff. We designed this workshop with exercises that will enhance your interviewing skills, show you who can sustain a successful match and how appropriate they are for your program.

February 12, 2010 - Shoring Up Self Esteem Through Strengths Based Communication - An important aspect of supervising mentors is helping them to use supportive language with their mentees that increases the opportunity for healthy mentor/mentee interaction. In this workshop participants will learn the principles behind strenghts based communication and how they can role model its effectiveness with mentors.

March 19, 2010 - Match Supervision: Managing expectations - Very often the key to success or failure of a mentoring match is in the expectation a mentor or mentee has about the relationship. Mentors with an unsatisfied need to " make a difference" may terminate early which can leave mentees feeling like failures and abandoned. In this workshop mentoring managers will be able to share some of their supervision challenges and learn from the facilitator and their colleagues how to handle these challenges and manage the frustration that often comes with match supervision.

April 16, 2010 - Termination: The significance of proper closure - No mentor should ever leave a match without providing him or herslef and the mentee an opportunity to express a sincere thank-you and goodbye. When matches end, mentors are role-modeling how to bring proper closure to relationships. In this workshop we will explore some of the reasons why mentors leave without saying goodbye, examine a variety of approaches to match termination and practice a few closure exercises to share with mentors.
