See what past attendees have said about our training!

"The class was tremendous! I cannot believe how thorough the Toolkit is! It's amazing and unbelievable. I have been spending an enormous amount of time compiling questionnaires from various organizations, but NO MORE! I wish I had known sooner! This saves me SO much time! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!" -- Sharon L. (Concrete Safaris)

"We have operated our mentoring program for many years in New York, but always feel that we can learn new things as the field changes. The workshop was amazing and [my staff] and I are already working on improving our program. We learned a lot and I just got off the phone with another training attendee who called with all kinds of questions about starting her program." -- Candida F. (Children's Village)

The Art of Fingerprinting: How to Roll Good Impressions For Volunteer Mentors

Make your mentor screening process a little smoother. Learn techniques for how to accurately roll the fingerprints of potential mentors for submission to SafetyNET.

One of the most important components of a mentor screening package is a criminal background screen through a national fingerprint database. In order to conduct this type of screen, potential mentors will need to be fingerprinted by a skilled fingerprint "roller". This training session will teach participants techniques for how to accurately roll the fingerprints of potential mentors for submission to SafetyNET directly from your office. This eliminates the need for potential mentors to travel to an off-site location to have their prints rolled, and helps to reduce the risk of having cards returned as ineligible.

At the conclusion of this training participants will:

  • -Learn how to accurately roll fingerprints.
  • -Learn how to eliminate the risk of having the fingerprint card returned.
  • -Practice rolling to ensure that good impressions will be captured.
  • -Learn how to enroll in and utilize SafetyNET.

Next Session: Tuesday July 29th, 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Location: MPNY

What to Bring: Your organization's fingerprinting equipment, so you can practice and receive coaching. Order materials directly from SIRCHIE (information is included on the registration form) as soon as you register to allow sufficient time for the material to be shipped to you.

Please note: This session is limited to MPNY member programs only.

The Friday Afternoon Series for Mentoring Program Professionals

Funded by a Generous Grant from Con Edison

The Mentoring Partnership of New York is happy, once again, to host the Friday Afternoon Series; helping professionals in the mentoring community to expand their knowledge and increase supervision skills. Topics selected for the Autumn-Winter 2008-2009 series were developed from participant's survey responses and your suggestions. *Before the series officially begins we are thrilled to be offering a continuation of the stimulating discussion started at the "Bridges Out of Poverty" workshop that was so popular last year. In October the series will officially kick-off by taking a fresh look at strategic planning and 21st century program management. November's session is devoted to enhancing our understanding of cultural diversity and the disparity of economic status and education inherent in many mentor/mentee matches. We will end 2008 with a new look at effective ways to train mentors. January is national mentoring month. The series resumes in February with an afternoon devoted to your supervision issues. In March we will engage in frank discussion of adolescent sex and sexuality. For spring we have reached out to your fellow program supervisors in the Partnership and asked them to share what they have learned about mentoring youth with special needs.

You can register for specific workshops or the entire series at www.mentoring.org/newyork/Registration Form, Friday Series.doc. Below is a list of dates with workshop descriptions.

September 12, 2008 (bonus workshop) – Bridges Out of Poverty II – Franca Flora - Based on the theory that no significant learning occurs without a significant relationship, Part II of this workshop will continue to explore the influences of economic conditions on relationship development and academic success. A consummate trainer and scholar of the "Bridges" curriculum designed by Ruby K. Payne, Ms. Flora will include strategies and methods for improving cognitive skills and emotional development in children who lack the basic resources needed for success. We encourage everyone (whether or not you attended Part I) to attend this session.

October 3, 2008Strategic Program Planning; New Goals and Objectives - Jean Lahage Cohen – A major factor in successful mentoring are lasting relationships; lasting relationships need to be supported by sound programs that are run with realistic goals and well planned objectives. With a combination of a background in financial forecasting and not-for-profit management MPNY's executive director, Jean Cohen, has developed a savvy eye for managing mentoring programs in the 21st century. This workshop will help you to evaluate what you do and how you can best plan for the future.

November 7, 2008Diversity and Cultural Competency – Gregory Owens – A lack of understanding about diversity can challenge and sometimes thwart the success of a mentoring match... This workshop will help you examine overarching themes that explain the need for cultural competence, and link that discussion to your efforts to provide excellent mentoring services to children and youth. Mr. Owens is the Director of Specials Projects with the State Office of Children and Family Services, is a state licensed social worker, certified trainer and leadership development consultant. He has extensive experience addressing the needs of minority youth.

December 12, 2008Train the Trainer – Franca Flora – An experienced trainer and mentor herself, Ms. Flora will share her 10 + years training mentors and the people who supervise them. Training mentors doubles the length of the average mentor match. This workshop is designed to assist program supervisors in developing effective mentor trainings and mentee orientation. Participants will learn techniques for assessing needs, engaging learners and group participation strategies.

February 27, 2009 - Match Supervision; Red Flags – Bruce Beckwith – Question: How do you know when there is a problem in a mentor match? This is a question all supervisors ask at some point. By working through specific scenarios(yours and ours), not uncommon in mentoring, this workshop will help you to better identify and address issues such as; poor communication, fuzzy boundaries, sex talk, uncooperative parents and so on. Bruce shares with you his clinical skills as a social worker and twenty years supervising volunteers.

March 6, 2008 - Adolescent Sex and Sexuality – TBA – Mentors of pre-teens and adolescents are frequently challenged by issues of sex and sexuality. Our experienced facilitator will walk you through the emotionally complex experience of teenage sex, sexuality, gender roles and peer pressure.

April 3, 2008Mentoring Youth with Special Needs - Four very different MPNY mentoring programs share what they have learned about working with; children of incarcerated parents, immigrant populations, youth in foster care and young people living with chronic illness and disabilities. A panel discussion with a Q&A period will be included.
