At an awards luncheon on January 30, 2008 Virginia Mentoring Partnership honored two outstanding mentoring programs, and two outstanding mentors for their contributions to the life and welfare of young people in Virginia.
Meet the 2007 Outstanding Mentoring Award Recipients
Divas with Promise Program, Caroline County
The Divas with Promise program focuses on the empowerment of middle and high school women in Caroline County, Virginia. In 2007, over 100 young women participated in this new program. Mentors lead workshops on etiquette, job skills, health and exercise, and share valuable life experiences with participants.
The "City-Wide" Micah Initiative, Richmond
Since it's inception in 2002, over 600 adults from various faith communities in Richmond have heeded a call to support the education and nurturance of the children in Richmond Public Schools. The Micah Initiative's membership has grown from 7 to 57 faith communities, whose members are serving as mentors and tutors in 24 Richmond elementary schools.
Bob Argabright-Trinity United Methodist Mentoring Program, Oak Grove – Bellemeade School, Richmond
Bob Argabright has served as a tireless advocate and supporter of the Oak Grove – Bellemeade School since 2004. Not only has Mr. Argabright mentored several children, he has helped recruit new mentors, organize mentor trainings, and plan school-wide assemblies.
Jenny Kim - Computers4Kids, Charlottesville
In her two years with Computers4Kids, Jenny Kim has shown outstanding leadership qualities, as a mentor and as the lead organizer for the Stay Active! program. The owner of a local web development firm, Ms. Kim is able to lend her enthusiasm and expertise to students working on various web design projects, and her mentees have shown improvements in school because of her support.
