Virginia Mentoring Partnership is an independent, 501( c )3 organization that was founded in 1994. VMP is part of MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership, a national nonprofit organization with a mission to help mobilize cities to increase mentoring programs.
Every child in Virginia who needs or wants a mentor is provided with one.
To provide educational services to existing and developing mentoring programs to increase the number and quality of mentoring relationships for children and youth in the state of Virginia.
VMP works throughout Virginia to increase the number of adults mentoring children and, more importantly, to help mentoring programs increase effectivness by providing:
Mentor training - VMP provides customized training for about 1,500 mentor/tutor volunteers annually, along with follow-up support and orientation for mentees.
Promotion of Best Practices - VMP trains mentoring program coordinators using comprehensive guidelines organized around four major sections: Program Design and Planning, Program Management, Program Operations, and Program Evaluation.
Promotion of Mentoring - January is Virginia Mentoring Month, featuring VMP's statewide annual awards and public awareness campaign.
Resource Library - VMP houses a Resource Library that provides a central location for more than 250 titles plus hundreds of articles that include current research and literature related to the mentoring field.
Since 1995, VMP has prepared more than 13,750 volunteers for their roles as mentors and tutors, and has provided services to more than 580 organizations including churches, schools, and government agencies, in 841 training sessions throughout 98 Virginia localities. In addition, we have provided program support to school districts and individual schools that house school-based mentoring/tutoring programs. VMP estimates that these efforts have benefited more than 16,000 underserved youth during the past decade. VMP has partnered with a variety of programs including Governor Mark Warner’s Partnership for Achieving Successful Schools (PASS) initiative, the Attorney General’s office, the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia, Communities In Schools of Virginia, and various businesses and faith-based partners.
