At LinkedIn, we know that relationships matter. Having a strong network can be critical to building a meaningful career. In fact, we’ve learned from LinkedIn data that a job seeker is 10x more likely to get a job if they are referred by a connection.

That’s why we’re committed to connecting young people to mentors, who can open up professional networks that might otherwise be out of reach. In 2018, we partnered with MENTOR and Starbucks to launch 10K Connections, a nationwide campaign designed to help close the mentoring gap. Through 10K Connections, we have the privilege of supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, YMCA of the USA, City Year, Year Up and the 2,044 approved programs in the Mentoring Connector.

Since launching our partnership, we’ve directed over 500,000 LinkedIn members to the Mentoring Connector to find programs that match their interests. We’ve also collaborated with MENTOR and local organizations to bring mentoring experiences to life at Starbucks stores in ten cities. At these 10k Connections events, young adults have the opportunity to meet with professionals and discuss their career aspirations and concerns.

Ultimately, we’re aiming to facilitate relationships that can help young people navigate the complex world of work. And we’ve been inspired by what we’ve heard from our participants so far. Sydney, a mentor at our Boston 10K Connections event, recently shared:

“In the time since the event, I’ve created a connection with one of the Year Up students that was in attendance… This weekend we had our first phone call so that we could get to know each other’s motivations for participating in a mentor/mentee relationship. I also identified a short term and long term goal that we will work together to achieve… Hopefully, this is the beginning of a solid relationship.”
