Leslie Hale Leads the Charge at MENTOR’s Newest Statewide Affiliate

This week, Leslie Hale joined MENTOR as the first executive director of our newest statewide Affiliate, MENTOR Georgia. With Hale’s arrival, MENTOR Georgia joins 23 other local MENTOR state Affiliates that provide regional leadership and infrastructure to support quality mentoring relationships to close the mentoring gap.

Coordinated by the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development, a Public Service and Outreach unit at the University of Georgia, MENTOR Georgia will seek to increase mentoring opportunities to support young people across the state by bringing together the mentoring community, providing programs and their staff access to leadership and professional development, and raising the profile of the importance of mentoring.

Hale comes to MENTOR Georgia after serving as the first-ever executive director of Books for Keeps, an Athens, Georgia-based nonprofit that creates at-home libraries for children in low-income communities. During her time with the organization, she grew the program four-fold, expanding its reach into schools across Athens-Clarke County and four surrounding counties. She says, “I’m beyond excited to be at MENTOR Georgia to get this new Affiliate off the ground after several years of careful incubation by The University of Georgia. Youth mentoring programs are leading dynamic, life-changing work all over our state. We have the remarkable opportunity to help them build capacity, connect them to best practices, and elevate the work they do.”

Joellen Spacek, MENTOR’s Senior Director of the Affiliate Network, comments on Leslie’s arrival: “Leslie’s experience as a social entrepreneur and her youth development and education background with connections across Georgia will be huge assets for MENTOR Georgia.”

“Leslie’s proven ability to foster community relationships, lead an organization, and engage with volunteers, combined with her passion for supporting young people, make her an excellent choice for MENTOR Georgia,” said David Meyers, Fanning Institute public service faculty member. “We look forward to her getting started and welcome her to the team.”
